Hi everyone,

So I decided to tidy up the wiring on my race GTiR as I am in the process of replacing the dash anyway. However, when I looked at the wiring I was totally shocked at the mentally-challenged things the previous owner did when wiring up various aftermarket parts (turbo timers, boost controllers, etc.). Basically, he appears to have ran out of coloured wire and has wired up EVERYTHING (+ and - feeds) using black wire. Not only this, but he's removed the insulation around the ignition barrel wires and simply soldered on new wire without wrapping it in electrical tape?!?!?! I'm surprised I haven't had more problems and/or fire................ Anyway, my problem is that I want to remove the ignition barrel from the steering column so I can begin to re-make the entire inside loom to my own 'custom' (read 'anally retentive') standards. The problem is that the ignition barrel seems to be fixed onto the steering column using self-sheer screws such as these:

Self-sheer screws

Has anyone drilled these screws out? Is it a simple task? Or will I require some sort of ridiculous diamond-tipped tungsten carbide HSS drill bits? Or does anyone have a better way of removing the barrel?

Bloody wiring mess. Not impressed  Evil or Very Mad
Many thanks,
Dave

Don't even waste your time, just get a spare a spare column with the barrel

I probably won't use another ignition barrel, and instead just use distribution posts and toggle switches to route the power. But even so, I was hoping to remove the barrel to at-least help de-clutter the dash as well as more easily see what's been soldered to what ignition terminal (barely any wire insulation so I just have black wires and bare wires soldered into the barrel).

Cheers,
Dave

dave you can get the sheer bolts out easily

all you need is a centre punch
place the point of the punch to the edge of the sheer bolt and give it a few light wallops, once the bolt is loose you can unwind it by just using the punch itself and spinning the bolt loose where its left an indent in the head.
little tip though.........don't completely remove one bolt without loosening the other first or the second one will be more difficult to remove as the ign barrel will be moving around.

takes less than 10 mins to have them off

Hi Bob,

Great! Thanks for the info! Just to confirm, do I hammer the centre punch into the side-end of the bolt that previously had the tightening head (which then got stripped off)? I take it this will give something for a flat-headed screwdriver (or even the centre punch) to grip on to when I try to loosen the bolt?

I really appreciate the help as I hate trying to drill out bolts..............
Thanks!
Dave

Actually hit it on the side, at an angle, with a hammer and small chisel and it will come undone.
You're not trying to make slot..  Smile

yep on the side of the sheer bolt dave then just spin it undone with the punch mark, it will come out easily.
certainly never had to drill one out before so no need for such extremeties

I think i have something similar in the garage somewhere.......

I'll first try Bob's suggestion, but I'll need to check if my centre punch is left or right handed..............  Laughing Razz Laughing

I took a look at my left-hand tool, and all I have are these:

Irwin Extractors

Perhaps won't give enough grip on the rounded heads. Will try the centre punch approach tomorrow.

Thanks for the help and advice!
