1 Rattle/vibration at ~3krpms on 20th September 2014, 2:23 am

Hello all, i recently purchased a 91 gtir. Whenever im driving it and get to 3200rpms i can hear a rattle and it will vibrate enough i can feel it in the seat. It vibrates more if im driving at 4krpms and let it engine brake down through 4-3k rpms. It does have "Custom" exhaust on it so i am hoping that is the cause of the issue. I pushed in the clutch when driving and it will still do it at exactly the same rpms. Any help/Advice would be appreciated.

Cheers, Alex.

So dose it do it standing still at the same rpm ? Get a look underneith check everything is tight check maybe as you say exhaust hangers/rubbers check front and rear engine mounts/ staibilisers incase your getting excess movement but should be all the time.

I havent checked, But i will as soon as im back home. I know that there is some wire holding the exhaust over to one side.

Sounds like maybe the exhaust is touching the bodywork.

I think it might be. Haven't had a chance to really look underneath it, but from what ive looked at the exhaust seems to be a pretty amateur job. At least i hope its that and nothing too major.

Hope you manage to get it sorted easily& it's nothing major.

You and me both haha. It does have one other issue which i think has to do with either the e-manage blue on it , or the factory bov. It has a stutter or boost leak or something right around .1 to .2 bar it will loose boost and i can hear the bov open then it will jump back up and keep going. It seems to do it less when the car is warm. and it will boost fine at .7 bar and hold it without issue. I've changed the plugs and that didnt seem to help.

Could be a number of things, hopefully not fuel starvation/ running lean.

No, doesn't loose all power. just drops the boost and you can feel the car not pull as hard.

Still possible then .... your have to get on the hunt for boost leaks first imo rule out the simple things and go forth ...

Check the exhaust isn't hitting, I had that problem and it was fouling where it passes the rear sub frame. Make sure the bov has a good source of vacumm, if not it can open under pressure. As stated above looking for boost leaks is a good place to start. Check all clamps and hoses for splits. Rule those things out first Smile

Ya, im going to have to check the exhaust. can anyone recommend an aftermarket down pipe? as i might just end up getting the exhaust redone.

Well, what would be the best value one? no point in paying $500 if the $250 does the same job right?

What size is on there atm? I'm not exactly sure on the cost of japspeed/ hks ones but the japspeed one was expensive. IMO better off getting it made up at a exhaust shop. Price will also depend on whether u want stainless or mild steel etc.
