So....I took the r for a blast today and all was going well until giving it the beans in 3rd flat out there's a very loud metal on metal sort of grinding horrible noise! I immediately pull over and switch off and inspect what I could....nothing. I turn it back on and there's no noise, but as I go to set off when I put it into first it crunches slightly almost like I haven't got my foot fully on the clutch.
So it keeps doing this, however if I put my foot on the clutch and wait a few seconds then put it into 1st there's no crunching scratch , it drives fine through all other gears! I've bled the clutch and it's still doing it....what the hell is wrong with it? Is it a clutch issue or the thrust bearing collapsing possibly (and causing the horrible noise).

What do you guys reckon???

Selector for 1st. Would of said if it was clutch related it would do it on all gears ?

If you pump the clutch pedal a few times before shifting, does it shift better?
If so, Might be worn piston seals,

If it was first gear selector why would it do it when I was driving in 3rd? Makes no sense? I've not tried pumping it.....worn piston seals....could be I guess, like I said if I put my foot on the clutch and wait a few seconds it doesn't do it

what gears share a shaft ? Bearing failing giving float. So it dose it in every gear ? Thought it might of happened in third but thought you said all others it works apart from 1 st ? Just thought if it was clutch related it would be all gears. What's it feel like when the car is off selecting everything inc reverse

So, if you put your foot on clutch and wait a few seconds, its works ok?
Sounds like something sticking or leaking to me because it's not quite reaching it's full movement,

You had recent PAR gear set ...
Could be something in box or clutch !
Was clutch new ?
Had you just banged it in 3rd when noise started ?
reason a wait period helps first is then shafts slowing down so then mesh easier.
Any noises present in clutch or box ?
worth checking clutch action & looking in bell housing best can & scan hydraulics too.
could be worth dumping box oil & checking for debris too.
Hopefully clutch related but being you gearbox the bookies favorite Shocked

I believe 1st and 2nd share a shaft, 3rd and 4th do and 5th its own shaft.

It only does it in 1st, no other gears when driving, however I haven't tried selecting any other gears with engine running but not moving any where so I will try that. Does it make any difference that when I'm moving the rotation of the wheels are similar of those with in the box hence no noise (if that makes sense)
I'm thinking you could be right cosmic (hoping) but that wouldn't explain the noise it made!
The clutch wasn't new but I bet it has less than a thousand miles on it and didn't remove it when I had the box off last time,
No I haven't just put it in 3rd, I was in 3rd towards the top of the Rev range when it did it.
There is now no noise at all when driving it!
Dropping the oil sounds a good idea, I'll see what I can see down the side of the clutch fork, strange how it doesn't do it if I wait a few seconds then put it into gear, like cosmic says sounds like something sticking....it also doesn't do it when the engine is off, it's fine...

If no clutch issue seen & oil clean then you going need pull box really to inspect clutch fully then box . At high rpm whatever caused the grinding noise should be easy spot .
From your remarks above don't sound like clutch hydraulics as you off the clutch & been in 3rd for while, is sounding a likely box issue but assume worst & hope for best lol . hopefully clutch ! ...

I've just spoken to my builder and he says it sounds like a clutch issue.....ill take the runner grommet off by the clutch fork later and have and see if I can see anything, if not at some point I May have to either take the box off and see what the clutch looks like or take it to him and see what he can see.....

Not been negative mate but he would say that as you just spent a fortune on the box and takes blame off him. It happens look at last time the spring failed. What's his rep with boxes ? Fingers crossed for you mate but when you spend a lot of cash as fustrating as it is or time consuming it needs checked so it don't get worse or damage something further

I know what you mean but I genuinely don't think it's the box....

Trust me it's an honour I could well do without! I'm seriously considering spicing things up and leaving the engine in this time...you know, just to make a change Razz

Part of me honestly wants to just fuck the whole car off and be done with it and get something else where I won't have this constant bastard problem! How ever every single time I look at it I just think, I don't think I'll have anything else that looks this bad ass, or as rare! I was at jap show today, I was the only pulsar there and it got so much attention, the Banzai editor said he wants to do a full feature on it. And I just think I've come so far with it, I've never put so much time and money into a car so I kinda wanna keep going with it! There's times when I could smash it up! Rant over

Why you having so much box issues !
What clutch being used with the new gearkit and how harsh you use it
Hopefully build error (Most early box issues are) hope for easy part replacement. Out of 3 par boxes I dealt with I seen no issues and a Malaysia 500hp track/drag r uses one and without much sympathy ...
Hope you get some luck on this ....

I keep reading your tales of woe, stick with it if you sell it all that will happen is you will buy something slower and regret it. Sounds like you have invested a lot, once the box is sorted good to go.

I wish I knew why, it's a competition clutch 6 paddle stage 4, since I've had all these problems I'm very sympathetic with the gear changes and never smash it through the gears, and like I said I was in gear when it happened, it's like Something inside has just collapsed or worked loose and gone flying about in the box! I hope it hasn't damaged the gears! I will take it back to the same guy and let him sort it, I will put it back in and see how it goes, if something else goes wrong I will be looking for some one else, possibly a specialist in these boxes (even though I don't think that person exists) of any one knows of any please speak up! The only upside (if you can see it like this) is I now find it an absolute piece of piss to take the engine and box out on my own in under 2 hours! I need a quick release gear box!

^ Hopefully a sprung hub one
Solids are good at killing boxes and shaft splines
Boxes on the r are quite basic but experience helps, preloaded settings is important as is all new bearings seals generally. The current par kits are easier to build and better than earlier ones
Hope nothing too shocking when inspect .
You got stick with it really, I had couple box issues on my evo and cost me in time and money but selling up is greater loss. R's are cheap and generally quite reliable for performance they give, any track car used hard can have issues and need money to improve so not always much gain moving on and best improving on what you built up so far .

Yes it's a sprung clutch, I wouldn't of bought a solid one, I also hope theres nothing too shocking! I'll keep with it, but this will be like the 5th or 6th time I've taken this out, I just wanna enjoy the bastard thing fuming ! Other than the box the rest of it is bloody brilliant tbh! Obviously as soon as I know I'll post it up on here and hopefully what ever it is it may provide some future insight for others so hopefully it won't happen to them.
