1 My Other Gti-r & GTI Projects and Purchases on 18th August 2016, 1:59 pm

gtircrazy

I thought i would start this thread to update when i do restorations for people, buy, tidy, race and or anything else out side of my two main projects.

First off a couple shots of the early 2000's to mid 2000's and some of the meets we ran, the rest in this post are of my first Gti-r and the adventure we had.

Early 2000's and at the start of the NZ club coming together on the UK modifiers forum.

Photo below is early 2000's we had around 45 members attend the event and around 25 Gti-r's.

Early 2000's another meet. We had pictures which i must find of this night of around 12 Gti-rs infront of the Nissan dealership

Mid 2000's we had a lot of cars attend this meet, maybe around 45 people and 15 Gti-r's it was raining heavily though and i did not want to take the group out in the wet, as a lot of them were young and no doubt wanted to show off.

My passion for these cars came from my teenage years, i ended up with my first one at the tender age of 16 years. Stock apart from wheels, lowering springs & a boost gauge. The gearbox blew almost instantly, and i handed it to our mechanic with the instructions rebuild it so it wont happen again, i was then handed a bill for the same price as the car when picking it up 4 weeks later... they had fitted a PAR gearset, which took over 400 launches and made it through 4 clutches by the time it was retired as the car was in parts 5 years down the track.

https://2img.net/h/i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/the_magic_touch/fishlense.jpg

Over time i slowly started to modify the car. With Front mounted intercooler, walbro fuel pump, bigger exhaust system all the minor things you do to your Gti-r at the start of ownership. (I wish i had left it stock!)

Standard on the big wheels and some average driving i achieved a 14.2 1/4 on 9psi.

Then with the basic mods it ran a 13.7 1/4 on 10psi i was hooked.

A met a soon to become best friend who also happened to be a very good car tuner and a but older than me. He was able to start steering my modifications and mechanical abilities in the right direction.

We fitted

550cc injectors

Z32 AFM

new colder spark plugs

electronic Greddy Profect 1 boost controller

Chipped & Tuned PMLS Daughter board and map switcher

I then managed a 12.4@179km 1/4 mile and wow was the car fast.

Also got a personilised plate.

However i was young and stupid still, only around 19 at this stage, and decided that street racing was really fun. So much so that i was doing it Friday, Saturday and Sunday's and the Gti-r was beating most things on the road making it even more addictive.

This all came to a stand point though, when i was caught and lost my licence for 6 months and had the car impounded.

Picking it up from the impound..

So i had learnt my lesson no more street racing, and while i was off the road i under went some good modifications on the car.

3" exhaust

GT3071R-WG Garrett Turbo

38mm Turbonetics wastegate

800cc Sard injectors

New front mount piping

Ohlines 2 way inverted rally suspension

Full nolithane kit replacing every single bush

Solid mounted engine mounts

New DBA brakes

We tuned it and maxed out the Z32 AFM at 25psi. The car was amazingly fast.

I only raced it once on 17psi and managed a 12.2@197km 1/4 mile running the big heavy wheels, wheel spinning 1/3 of the track. The trap time being fast enough for a 10 second pass... (if everything held together and launched properly i doubt it would have)

The engine was tired though, so i decided it was time to go racing, caging the shell, and sending the engine off for a major build with legendary Nismo works team driver and Sr20 builder Reg Cook.

Big plans were made, but never came about. We started to build an SR to handle 700-1000HP range and started collecting supporting modifications, the engine was semi completed, but i never finished this project selling the shell after owning it for 7 years.

We ended up with a few pulsars inbetween.

A stock standard 1990 grey pulsar we used as a daily driver. We picked it up with 45,000km on the clock and took it to around 90,000km. Before we bought it someone had rallied it though/ grass auto crossed, it was in average condition for the low KM.

Fitted some lowering springs and wheels. We ended up selling it as we had to many at the time.

After we gave her a tidy and some rims.

I don't have to many pictures of this car on the P.C but my partner owned this Gti-r from around 60,000km and daily drove it up to 170,000km. Car ran 14psi and had lowering springs and wheels, it also was fitted with recaro seats.

It was later wrecked from sitting for to long, i rebuilt it partly but found the body had to much rust and ended up crushing the shell. It ended up being the bridge for the build for my current Red show car.

Had someone i knew call me about an RB model, so i went over and had a look.

It was rusted, hole punched in the fuel tank, just a right mess. Interior was a mess, no engine. Real sad to see.

So i bought the tag and plates to frame, interior & other RB bits including diffs. Then had the owner crush the shell.

This next one was a real shame, picked it up for a good price and wanted to put it back on the road as it was de-registered.

However upon inspection at home i found that the rear had being in such a hard knock the chassis has split and water had got enbetween the seams and rusted out the inside and outside skins in the rear left.

So i decided to part it. Car had a forged engine, and was really clean. I polished and painted everything up before taking it apart for the pictures to sell the main items such as the engine.

Real shame.

This one i went to look at for someone to give them a hand. In the end it turned out they decided to sell it due to the number of issues it had.

However i saw past the ugly to the solid engine, and 150,000km on the clock.

It was blowing a huge amount of black smoke stutering on boost and running terribly.

I replaced a leaky injector, AFM a couple split vaccum hoses and it ran mint. So went about trying to remove some of the poor taste mods from 2001...

Car sold once complete within 15 hours of it being advertised. Drove and went very well.

So after seeing this one up for sale i decided to go have a look.
Upon inspection found the car was stacked to the roof with Gti-r parts the owner had being collecting for years. It was cheap so i though stuff it.
Got it home unloaded everything i wanted. Had my wife go crazy at me for bringing home such a huge project... so needless to say i put it back up for sale again minus a few bits. A shame as it would have being fun to build.

Full 8 point cage
Seem welded chassis
112km on the clock
stripped and painted underside and engine bay
Roof was cut off though and needed re-tacking
they had started to replicate the WRC NME dash

I was offered a GTI which was pretty rough with an SR20VE.

Thought why not, replaced doors, front pannels, Cut and welded gaurds as they were rusty and re-sprayed in my garage.

Then sold on. Was not really my thing at the time, but it was a fun wee car. Did not get a huge amount of photos of this one as i was not that interested in it at the time.

This next project was an interesting one.

Bought with a freshly rebuilt motor with only 300km on the clock. Compression test was good. Drove home good. The car needed a new exhaust as the old one was falling apart and smashing on the chassis. So on the way back from having a full 3 Inch system fitted i noticed blue puffs coming out the exhaust.

Then piston slap became very very loud.

So the rebuilt engine was pulled, and a second hand lump fitted. 400km later.. big end knock.. great...

So third engine in, from a mate who had forged the engine and used it to produce 280kw in his race car. Also changed clutch to a puk clutch and swapped the gearbox for a known good second hand unit.

The turbo then blew... so new turbo on.. found air leaks in the front mount as well.. so replaced that.

New oil filter ect.

The car was basically a new unit mechanically, the paint was orginial but in good condition and 168,000km on the clock. Nismo suspension fitted and a nice new set of rims and tyres. The car sold before i even put it on the market through word of mouth.

But what a mission! just to keep one on the road.

The day it was bought:

Wheels changed

On its 600km trip to its new home

So then our local drag racing season was about to start last year and i thought why not.

I searched around for a car to compete against the honda's in the FWD class, and remembered the SR20VE i had, as per above.

I managed to get my hands on this:

Picked it up already converted with the following mods:

*2000cc sr20ve VVL engine from 1999 P11 nissan primera
*Fujitsubo 4-2-1 stainless extractors and front pipe
*2.5" mild steel exhaust with 1 rear muffler
*sr16ve cams
*Custom alloy 3" intake pipe
*k&n cold air intake system ducted to front bumper
*3 core Fenix radiator
*13 row mocal oil cooler with braided lines and AN fittings
*sr20de p10 ecu with daughter board tuned to run sr20ve engine
*Greddy MSS controller to control VVL switch.
*p10 primera air flow meter
*new ngk spark plugs and leads
*epman high flow italian fuel filter
*GTIR intank fuel pump
-Drivetrain-
*RSF32V GTi lsd gearbox 4.1 ratio
*Autoclutch heavy duty clutch and pressure plate
*New GTi lsd cv joints from nissan
*Short shift kit with new bushes
*Nismo gearknob
-Suspension / Brakes-
*Monroe GT gas shocks with super low King Springs
*New front sway bar bushes
*ADF22v GTIR front brakes with bendex ultimate brake pads
*Castrol Racing DOT4 brake fluid
*Genuine VOLK GTC 15x7 2 piece light weight alloy wheels
*New Westlake RS 195/50/15 semi slick tyres all round
-Body / Interior-
*Xenon Headlight bulbs & LED park lights
*GTi interior in excellent condition, no burns rips etc
*MOMO steering wheel
*Mechanical oil pressure and water temp guages with LED back lights
*LED dash lights
*1.0kg Fire extinguisher mounted in steel bracket in passengers foot well
*A/C removed

So i took it down for a shake down run before a tune. 14.2 was the best time i could get out of it.

So off i went for the tune.

Day it was bought:

Straight to the strip that night:

Next day we took it to the dyno

It made 125kw at the wheels. We then returned to the drag strip and managed to pull a 13.9 second 1/4 mile just with a re-tune... SWEET!!

Picked up some N1 cams and an Xcessive plenum

Fitted those and back on the dyno

We made 159kw at the wheels amazing!!

With that power we got the times down to 13.5 which was great but traction was a major issue and the times were not consistent due to this. So i decided to try and lighten the car, and also find a set of DOT approved slicks to get some grip at the strip, and to fit some coil over suspension to position the car properly.

ok i admit it was about here the cheap bit of summer drag racing fun turned expensive.

I sourced a set of Lenso drag 13" x 8" wheels from the USA designed for honda's (had to have the centre bore machined to fit onto the gti locator hub)

And a set of M & H DOT approved drag tires as well.

Got some BC coil overs at the same time. And also had designed and made a set of headers in Mexico, and what a bit of art they were.

At the same time i had a mate wack together some fibre glass panels for me, and i went about cutting and stripping the car out.

They didnt just bolt on this took a lot of effort hahaha.

Fitted the new exhaust and exhaust manifold and back to dyno. We also ran a straight pipe god it was loud.

161kw at the wheel on a stock sr20ve head (except for cams) and stock bottom end.

So it was time to compete in the 7 part drag series in the FWD all motor N/A class.

So we took out a couple series wins, the main competition was K powered honda's. And we can second over all in point standings for the whole series GO NISSAN!!! We missed out on first place by 10 points (one race) in the end.

Was a lot of fun, but the little car had to go before i dropped 10k into a race motor for it.

So, another car turned up at my house which i could not turn down.

The story "Wiring is burnt out and car will not start" shell is also de-reg'd so very little chance of it returning to the roads.

After a quick inspection of the wiring i found the battery had being moved to the back, and the wiring done up in the engine bay really poorly.

So after fixing that, i started inspecting the fuses, they all checked out good. The ECU was aftermarket, a Apexi power FC with hand held unit. I pulled this out and replaced with a factory unit, instantly i hear the fuel pump prim, something that was not happening with the Apexi,

Sure enough the the car turned over and tried to kick itself into life, but the larger injectors and Z32 MAF soon stopped that.

Inspected the ECU found burnt out tracks, and possible component damage, repaired tracks but found ecu still no good. After further investigation found i needed a bunch of electronic parts to repair the thing so i gave up.

The car at some stage has had the works done to it.

* Apexi Power FC
* Greddy Boost Controller and Display Screen
* White faced gauges
* Aftermarket wing mirrors
* Modified rear bumper with evo 3 end caps
* Apexi IHI RX6 Turbo
* Stainless custom top mount manifold, downpipe, exhaust
* Z32 AFM
* Custom FMIC and piping
* RC 800cc injectors
* Sard FPR
* Forged motor (pistons rods, new bearings, ect)

I compression tested the motor looked all ok. Got it running sort of on a chipped ecu i had at home. Moved it into the strip down garage. After further inspection found a heap of rust through the chassis. This with the fact it needed a new after market ecu and it was de-registered for NZ roads i decided to cut my wallet strings and part it.

This one well... I was almost gifted it really.... The owner needed it gone so i took it off his hands.

It was a mess, and ugly and cut up. So i did it a favor and ended its life. Took me a night to strip down.

Took next to no photos as well... look at it... yuck....

I drove around 400km to go look at two gti-rs when i picked this one up. The first was suppose to be a mint driver... upon inspection is was far from it! Low compression, steering alignment out, which had resulted in eaten out tire... i only bought one trailer so left that one and took the one we knew was broken to start with. Got it cheap, rightly so with 300,000km on the chassis. This car was by far the most dirtiest oil covered sack of crap i have ever worked on. I was glad to see it out of the garage and the shell off the the metal man. I threw out so much from it as it was absolutely knackered.

Had a few good bits and bobs on it but most of it was rubbish. Had a lot of hold ups on this one as well just bad work man ship before hand making things hard.

It's a shame i have had to strip 3 in a row. Don't like doing it, but when i'm getting shells not worth putting the time and money into at least i'm getting bits for the next good ones to stay alive.

Right so i bought the bat car.

I have nick named this car batman. And it is still with me at the moment... doing bat car things...

I know you are all envious of this car admit it... its your dream... every gti-r owner wants there car to look like this....

So anyway long story short, i jumped in the car with the trailer and went and picked this one up. Was not sure what i was going to do with it until i took it for a drive... holly crap its fast... forged motor, big turbo, big fuel system, tuned ecu to 20psi.

Bad point is the body and the body kit.... car was full of rust and had a few mechanical issues.

So replaced the main crank seal, replaced both hubs, replaced both front wheel bearings with new ones. Replaced the front shocks, then went about cutting the rust... there was a heap.... the side skirts are moulded into the body which is annoying as i cannot be bothered repairing that if i remove them. So the kit is going to stay... I think.... Its now semi rust free and mechanically sound.. and it keeps growing on me every time i drive it...

I do how ever need to sell it... i dont need another one in the collection especially this one...

I'll get some more photos at some point as these are oldish.

What a cracking read! You want to send this to a publisher and get a book deal,  Very Happy
Thats gotta earn a rep point for posting all this in a single day.
It sounds like R's are part if your DNA,
So is the Bat car the only R you have now?

Wow. Yes top read that. Some stunners there. I like the grey one that you put chrome 7 spokes. The engine bay on that is awesome. And the side skirts and bumper look evil.

Thanks mate yeah big task in one day uploading the pictures to photobucket was the hardest and most time consuming part.

No i have two others that are my main ones at the moment which have there own build threads on here.

Yes i put a lot of time and effort into the grey car. Was a fun build. I was not overly keen on the body kit but it was on the car it seemed some people loved it and others hated it there was no in between. Yeah i put a great deal of time into the engine to make it the feature of the car.

I was impressed the 18" x 7" wheels on the car did not rub or scrape either that i fitted. I had to use 5mm spacers on the front and back to achieve that but still big wheel for the gtir.

I thought about 18s on mine but assumed it would be a bitch. Did it take a lot of work to get them not to rub. Did u have to roll the arches up or anything. And what suspension set up did u have on it.

Oh sorry man, i cannot remember what suspension was in it at the time. It was just a shock and spring combo. No coil overs.

Nah didnt roll the guards or anything offset was right on the rims.
