1 Helloooo from sunshine pulsar on 28th October 2016, 8:21 am

Hi, my names Dave and I'm a happy new owner of a bright yellow GTiR. My standard practice when I get a new car is to join every owners forum I can find so here I am.

The car is a 1992 umbrella model (umbrella present!) with Nismo light pod and ali sump guard. Originally it was red but someone decided to have a laugh and paint it yellow. It is absolutely totally completely standard, still has its flare.

Brief history for context: I have a Nissan Stagea (comedy Skyline estate) which I have done a couple of track days in at Blyton and at Spa Franchochamps. I wanted something else that would be a bit better if we continued to do the odd track day. I'm not talking about every weekend, just once or twice a year. My wife joined me on my last track day and she really enjoyed it (and was pretty handy at it too!) so we agreed to get something that is a bit less like piloting a shipping container.

To begin with we looked at Corolla AE86's (Initial D replicas) but they are mental prices. I also looked at 200sx but my wife doesn't really like them. My dream is an R32 or R34 Skyline GTR to match the Stagea but that's beyond my budget. Evenutally we agreed on a Pulsar. The bright yellow one stood out and shouted BUY ME so we did.

I've put slotted discs on (still on standard 14" wheels though) and better brake pads, and a fujitsubo turbo back exhaust but left everything else standard. Part of the reasoning for keeping it sensible is that I also have a Dax Cobra kit car with a 6.3 stroker SBC making 430hp which satisfies all of my mental barely-driveable-on-the-roads needs so I wasn't looking for something too mad.

I'll admit I wasn't entirely convinced by the Pulsar to begin with but I've done a track day at Snetterton and an Autosolo event and it is growing on me   Very Happy  It will live in my nice heated and dehumidified garage next to the Cobra.

I've already introduced myself to Bob at GTI-R-US  Cool

Welcome to the forum mate, looks like the car has some nice extra's on it, I'm sure you will enjoy it Smile a lot of people say they were unsure with an R at first but then these little cars grow on you and then your addicted and they take all your money Laughing

Trouble is I've already got 2 other high-maintenance cars with "character" so my attention is a bit stretched and sometimes its hard to forgive the little niggles, for example this weeks annoyance is suddenly the interior lights no longer work. It does seem to be pretty unreliable electrically which surprised me as all my other old Nissans have been fine, however the one thing I was expecting was brittle plastic trim snapping all over the place and rubber seals shrinking (doors) but on that score the Pulsar is absolutely great and is still like new.

Hi and welcome Smile
The yellow looks good Smile
I had a yellow one a few years back. Had an msa logbook and full welded in roll cage...
What are your plans then? Coilovers, wheels and brakes?

Any engine bay pics and interior pics to show us? Smile

This was taken before fitting the stainless exhaust and decat. I still have the standard exhaust practically new, it has Calsonic stamped on back box, sat doing nothing in my garage if you get my drift  Cool. I also have 2 good cats. Not sure where the second one came from, the car came with a big box of spares with full entire spare carpet and mats.

My plans with this car change every 5 minutes. So far it has decat and stainless exhaust, slotted discs  (standard size), mintex 1144 up front and yellowstuff rear. Everything else is standard. Still in KM's and still has the speed limiter - which was quite annoying at Snetterton.

It even still has the original Japanese radio, and of course their FM band is different to ours so it doesn't get half the stations here!

Based on advice I think whiteline ARB is next upgrade. Apart from being bright yellow its so clean and standard that I don't want to mod it too much. I'm going to continue to use the car for autosolo events at 80% effort so I don't kill it and commitment and probably 1 or 2 track days a year.

Aha! That's nice thanks! The amount of original stuff with this car is insane, original japanese handbook and Pulsar marketing brochure, even japanese receipts for small service items, original japanese guarantee slip and spec sheet for the fujitsubo exhaust. The seller also had period nismo option list, Nissan early 90's general marketing guff and other brochures too.

The guy I bought it off did mention about putting it back to red. I'm totally sold on yellow now though, I'm used to people gawping open mouthed from when I'm out in my cobra so I don't mind Smile

I did Japfest in the Stagea this year but I'm looking forward to doing it in the pulsar next year. What other shows havea strong 'R turnout?

Welcome to our forum Dave welcome

Know all about this particular car as you well know, very nice it is too but have to agree with the whole car being back to aj4 which was their original plan when they collected it from us

but its your car so if you like the yellow then stick with it but would be worth more back in o9riginal colours

yeah I think if I wanted to make my money back on it then I'd have to get it back to its original red but Mrs Dave is in charge of colour co-ordination in our household so its staying yellow for the forseeable future Smile

extra bonus question - whats the standard way of removing the speed limiter? Do most people have it deleted by getting a remap/nistune or whatever? I've seen a thingy called speed limit defencer by HKS that solders on to the speedo circuit board behind the dash and was wondering if its worth trying.

This car of course still has the original ECU thats never been touched but since fitting the stainless exhaust and decat it surges and bucks very very slightly on light overrun on hot days so I wondered if I should just get it remapped - and in the process presumably remove the speed limter

Hi Bob yeh that'd be great. I've got a little shopping list to sort out with you so I'll give you a call once I know everything I need.... I think I need some front ABS sensors,  drivers side driveshaft seal and possibly front wheel bearings too. I promised the Pulsar it would be in its new garage before November and its still outside in the cold so its making a fuss of itself Rolling Eyes Smile

It had a terrifying death-rattle on heavy braking which turned out to be the sump guard was loose so thats a relief!

regards

Dave

oh... just a bit of shameless showing off.... I was extremely happy today that my Cobra had its first MOT and passed with flying colours. The tester gave me one advisory that was "your wheels need a polish" cheeky git!
