Last week on boost I could hear a squeel..
I couldn't work out where it was coming from as it was only a very light squeeling.
You could hardly hear it.
Lifted the bonnet and revved the engine and you could faintly hear it but I couldn't trace it down.
Turned the engine off, my turbo keeps spinning for a while after with the roller bearings.
They were very loud Sad
Like a grinding noise.
I havent driven the car since Sad
Spoke to someone about a rebuild.
But because I need the cast water jacket replacing aswel it could be upto £400+vat for a rebuild Sad
So I have sourced a Chinese 2871 instead.
I have heard a few people are using them with great results.

I started thinking (it's dangerous I know)
The Chinese 2871 is internal wastegate and a .64 housing.
Mine is external and .89 housing.
Can you see where my thinking is going? Laughing
Yup I'm going to use the core from the Chinese turbo to rebuild my turbo  Laughing
The new turbo should be here by the weekend so hopefully have it all done this weekend Smile

I rarely boost to be honest mate.
Its a daily driver so im more interested in just having it driving again.
I'm swapping the hot side and housing to make things easier..saves welding up the penny for the external wastegate.
And I have to turn the housing around anyway so may aswel put the larger one on.
If it doesn't last long I havent lost a great deal of money..they are cheap enough to replace lol

Are there any Chinese turbos that are a straight swap for the pulsar or do you have to fuck around with all of them?

Pretty sure the 2871 would bolt straight up Tom.
I'm only changing it because my setup is different.

what wrong with your center housing, cracked .
I don't even like chinese wheel bearings but interested how your chinese and garrett mate together
Assume you kind of going taking the chinese CHRA and putting current compressor and turbine housing .

I had a few mates that have used similar and didnt have any problems but they weren't daily drivers. For piece of mind and reliability I would be going for something better proven but that's just my opinions. Can you live with buying one and something going wrong and spending more money? Smile

I got my standard one rebuilt last year. They had to swap out the CHRA as it was goosed, uprated to 360° thrust bearing and put on a new spec billet wheel (can't remember which side though).
If I remember correctly it was about £330 all in.
These were the guys that did the work and I was very pleased with the results!

Might be worth a call?

We have sold and fitted a few of these chinese 2871 turbos from one specific company who we are now agents for, they come with a 2 year warranty so you cant go wrong. To date not one come back and no issues.
A new Garrett 2871 will set you back around £1100 with actuator etc, and these are a fraction of the price yet still produce around 400bhp at 1.7bar, spool time is also very good!

Be careful though as contrary to belief they do not all come from same manufacturer. There are actually 4 different companies (i know of) that produce similar products which are nowhere near as good, quality, spool time, reliability of their lets say 'shoddy' products gives the other companies a bad name

Stu.........dont think youll be able to interchange the cartridge as the housings are slightly different. Just bolt it up and blank off your external w/g, but depends who you bought it from!

Mr B the cast in the centre that houses the bearing on mine has corroded very bad mate.
So much so it hasn't had a water feed since I first bought the car in 2009.
Thanks for the input guys Smile
Bob thanks for your input, I'm not sure what company I bought it off. Its a uk seller.
I didnt think about them being slightly different and me not being able to interchange them.
Its being delivered today so I will be able to take a look at it.
I will take my car Down my mates unit today and leave it there so I can work on it at my leasure.
I will report back on wether it is interchangeable or not in the next couple of days Smile

Thanks Mike.
I was going to use the Chinese one and then get mine rebuilt in time.
Then had the thought of using it as parts for my turbo.
I spoke with a guy named Liam who rebuilds garrett turbos.
He said upto £400+vat so may be less.
I will see what happens.

A few lads have said the same Pete.
I think I will just use this chinese one as is just to get me on the road and save a few pennies to get mine rebuilt as planned.

look at rebuilding it yourself stu as pretty easy, The bearing kits are quite cheap but buy good ones as I had 1 kit that had seal bit to big so couldn't be used, Someone may have a decent used CH they could bung you for a rebuild.
I think Bob be right about not being exact match for a part swap but be cool if was so worth looking at it .
expect lack of water cooling what helped kill the bearing .
Really don't believe the bit about you not boosting it, I can here your dump valve and exhaust over here lol :-)

Lol MrB it is loud enough for you to hear it mate haha

I took the turbo off this morning.
The housing on my turbo is huge compared to the new one.

I have taken the hot side off the new one and taken it to have the penny welded up.
Pick it up tomorrow.
I will see how this turbo is before deciding what to do with mine.
I'm not looking for huge power so hopefully this new one is good and lasts Smile
